Set up the GA4 Property

Table of Contents:

1. Create GA4 Property

  • In your Universal Analytics GA property go to Settings -> Property Tab -> GA4 Setup Assistant

  • Click Get Started:

  • Create property:

  • Property created!

2. Create a Data Stream

  • Create one single web data stream for all your websites.

  • Give your data stream a name and add the main website url:

  • Now copy your MEASUREMENT ID from the Data Stream you have just created. We are going to need this ID on our Google Tag Manager setup for GA4.

  • Configure the enhanced measurement options as the image below. We are disabling the scrolls and form interactions because these two events are manually set up through Google Tag Manager.

3. Create the Custom Definitions

As the last step go to GA4 to Configure -> Custom definitions -> Create custom dimensions and add more readable names for our custom dimensions.

The custom definitions should be aligned with your GA4 fields to set, user properties and event parameters. Start by creating the global tracking custom definitions as the table below:

4. Create GA4 Alerts

Navigate to your GA4 homepage, scroll down and go to the section "Insights & Recommendations". Click on "View all insights".

On the Insights page, click on the button "Create" and enable all pre-defined Custom Insights. Don't forget to click on "Create selected".

You can also customize your own GA4 Alerts. We recommend setting two custom alerts using the configuration below:

  • Total users with direct as source anomaly detected

  • Average engagement time per session anomaly detected
